President Obama will gather AIDS experts at the White House today to launch the first national strategy designed to cut new infections, boost the number of people who get tested and treated, and reduce disparities in access to care.The report notes that 1.1 million people in the USA are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and an additional 56,000 become infected each year, according to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Yet many Americans no longer view HIV as an urgent health problem, despite the misery it causes and its potential for further spread, the report says.
“Unless we take bold actions,” it warns, “we face a new era of rising infections, greater challenges in serving people living with HIV, and higher health care costs.”
These actions include intensifying HIV prevention efforts in communities hit hardest by the disease; the use of a variety of prevention methods because “no single ‘magic bullet’ will stem the tide of new HIV infections”; and the first national effort in decades to educate “all Americans about the threat of HIV and how to prevent it.”

My friend Michael texted me one day telling me he was near my apartment, and had to tell me what just happened to him.
Short of breath from running, he sat down and began his story.
After exiting the West 4th Street Subway station, he decided to cut through Washington Square Park. It was fairly crowded, as it usually is, with a few street performers in the empty water fountain, crowds gathering to watch them and NYU students rushing to their next class.
He was strolling over a grassy knoll, skimming through his Ipod when he was suddently tackled from behind. Tackled so hard that his earphones popped out from his ears.
He rolled over onto his back, believing he was being mugged, only to see standing above him Bill Murray.
“No one will ever believe you.” Bill said, who then proceeded to run away.

Every little girl dreams about her wedding day, complete with visions of a big beautiful white dress and, of course, the perfect man. But 9-year-old Jayla Cooper didn’t have a lifetime to wait for Mr. Right. The Southlake, TX, girl had been battling leukemia for two years, a battle that would end in just a matter of weeks. But what Jayla did have was a groom. He’s her best friend, Jose Griggs, 7, a fellow patient at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. Jayla and Jose tied the knot in February 2009 to fulfill her final wish: Getting married in a beautiful wedding, surrounded by family and friends. From the flowers to the banquet hall, donations poured in to give a North Texas bride the wedding of her dreams.
